Riyadh: Norway reaffirmed its commitment to deepening cooperation with Saudi Arabia during a celebration of its National Day in the Saudi capital on Thursday evening.
Norwegian Ambassador Kjersti Tromsdal emphasized the importance of finding new avenues for partnership between the two nations, highlighting areas such as green technology, seafood trade, and mediation efforts in international conflicts.
The reception, held at the Norwegian Embassy in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, was attended by Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, the mayor of Riyadh, alongside diplomats, business leaders, and members of the growing Norwegian community in the Kingdom.
The event marked the anniversary of the signing of Norway’s constitution on May 17, 1814. Ambassador Tromsdal described the day as one of national pride and tradition, deeply cherished by Norwegians.
In her address, she traced the roots of Saudi-Norwegian diplomatic relations back to 1961 and noted how shared characteristics such as both nations being major oil and gas producers and maritime countries have shaped a mutually beneficial relationship over decades.
She underlined that both countries are accelerating their green transitions and are increasingly collaborating in clean energy and environmental protection, signaling a future of innovation and sustainable development.
Norwegian firms actively contributing to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative were acknowledged as central to this bilateral progress.
Tromsdal pointed out that cooperation spans diverse industries, from aquaculture and energy to digital technologies and environmental services.
Companies such as Jotun, which is celebrating 40 years in the Kingdom, along with others like DNV, Interwell, and Bravo Seafood, exemplify the strong commercial ties.
She also noted that more Saudi citizens are visiting Norway, reflecting growing people-to-people connections.
On the diplomatic front, Tromsdal praised Saudi Arabia’s constructive role in regional and global affairs.
She highlighted the collaboration between both countries within the Global Alliance for the Implementation of a Two-State Solution, and expressed appreciation for Saudi efforts in supporting Palestinian rights.
Norway’s belief in dialogue and a rules-based international order aligns closely with Saudi Arabia’s recent mediation initiatives, reinforcing mutual respect and diplomatic synergy.
The celebration also showcased Norwegian culture and culinary excellence. Attendees were treated to premium Norwegian seafood, prepared by Chef Daniel and his team flown in from Norway, reflecting the nation’s rich maritime heritage dating back to pre-Viking times.
Norway, now the world's largest exporter of seafood, continues to lead in salmon farming and aquaculture innovation, which was pioneered there 60 years ago.
Tromsdal’s pride in these traditions was clear as she invited guests to enjoy the flavors and hospitality of her homeland.
Concluding her remarks, Tromsdal expressed gratitude to her embassy colleagues, noting that this event marked her first National Day in Riyadh as ambassador.
Her sentiments echoed the spirit of unity, collaboration, and shared ambition that defined the evening and the evolving partnership between Norway and Saudi Arabia.
